on 13 and 14 september, ida and isaac were reanimated at folkestone beach. two 70cm tall rod puppets turned a beach hut into a dolls’ house and invited visitors and passer-bys inside for a unique 'one spectator show’. it combined puppetry, art performance and visual art, and develops the event, ida on the beach, which had appeared in the whitstable biennale 09.
this body of work is based on an image retrieved by the artists that sees her relatives pose for a snapshot in 1930, across the channel at berck-plage.
ida and her husband isaac, the couple on the right, were deported on july 23rd 1942 and never came back.
the performance explores the (photographic) clichés of happy families, happy photographs of happy holidays on beaches, and questioned personal and family stories in the context of history.
