plants on a journey’ marked the third in a series of collaborative projects between gardener, artist, and educator, will gould, and artist, educator, and prop stylist, emily hill.

combining their practice the pair create ‘living sculpture’; their work reminds us of our interconnection with the environment and with each other, and aims to “walk a line between the man-made and the wild”.

folkestone’s furnicular lift provided a space for discovery. herba in itinere looks at the endeavours of the victorians in an era of spirit and adventure. focusing on science and nature, and specifically on the plants introduced to the region during the 1800’s, herba in itinere referenced the journeys plants and plant hunters made to introduce the ‘strange’ and ‘exotic’ to our culture.

as the leas lift was overtaken with curiosities, the interdependence between plant life and human life was revealed; a delicate reliance was illustrated in the balance between the two lifts. as plants take up seats alongside people, viewers could observe their fellow passengers in closer detail.  the point at which the two carriages passed, represents a fleeting equilibrium, and a glimpse into a mysterious world to be explored anew.
