lulu allison created a temporary installation in the alleyway next to the waterstones bookshop, folkestone. it was a response to the space, where the architecture and the weather dictated the terms of the installation.
the work was constructed in layers, sheets and ribbons of cut newspaper, where text on the pages became reformed either deliberately or by chance into new stories.
the primary interest of lulu allison work is in the re-forming or manipulating of a space, where a temporary intervention lasts as long as the paper holds against the weather or the pull of the passer-by. there is also an exploration of waste and value, yesterday’s stories become todays trash, in turn becoming paper walls that return to trash by a process of weather and wear. she states that there is a balance to be achieved between the strength to last and the frailty to disperse. the process of dilapidation, whether over days or weeks is a part of the work.the frailty of the paper mirrors the frailty of interest in stories of news. things don’t last but they may change and endure in other forms. they are easily and often discarded.
