in the entrance hall area of the leas lift, souvenir magazine presented a video installation by filmmakers samuel carney and james newton.
displayed on a 3.5” monitior encased in a portable ‘showbox’ made from salvaged furniture carney and newton screened eight silent films each lasting forty seconds.
the design of the film screen referenced the wooden structure of the lift carriages and the worn aesthetic of the victorian building. the length of each film further referenced the duration of the lift journey. the silent films played with images of the seafront and the site of the lift building.
in addition to the film works a special edition of souvenir magazine was produced and placed in the lift carriages for the duration of the exhibition.
