HA-HA
TRACT Collective | Sculpture, Video, Sound & Performance

This exhibition reflects the influence of garden and landscape design conventions on the contemporary townscape and the architecture of vision. Considering ideas of excursion, recreation and site specificity, the works in HA-HA have been developed in response to the context of the Lorry Driver's Lounge and its surrounding area.

The Lorry Driver's Lounge is a rest stop for drivers using the adjacent Lorry Park, bounded by the derelict Folkestone Harbour Railway Station and the sea.

The exhibition title is inspired by an element of garden design based on a trench that acts as a concealed barrier in a composed, idealised landscape. The etymology of this term is believed to be from the imagined exclamation of surprise ('ha ha' or 'ah ha!') elicited by an encounter with one. Without the visual obstruction of a fence or wall the scene appears uninterrupted, allowing the eyes to ‘sweep’ over the view.
