UNTITLED
Steven Allbutt | Scultpure & Sound
Site: Spurn Point Lighthouse, Yorkshire

Steven Allbutt uses personal journeys and experiences as starting points, expanding upon these to place the work within a wider social, political and historical context.

Working as Artist In residence for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Steven Allbutt spent six months working in and around the decommissioned lighthouse and military ruins along Spurn Point Nature Reserve. This exhibition is a further development of that body of work.

Using one of William Sansome Tucker’s acoustic mirrors, the artist has captured the sound of passing ships and approaching zeppelins at Spurn Point. The sounds will be transmitted along the five mile coastal spit, to the lighthouse at the far end, and then broadcast for passing visitors to this remote location. Using mobile phones, microphones and solar energy the artist has created a live connection to the military sound mirror enabling it to be relayed to the lighthouse and the gallery.
