over the august bank holiday weekend 2008, folkestone fringe presented the leas lift experimental sound project.
folkestone's leas lift is one of the oldest victorian water lifts in the
country. it serves as a viewing platform for the channel and connects folkestone's seafront with the town's centre.
for the experimental sound project, artists were invited, through an
open submission platform, to create new audio work that responded to a palette of sounds, made available for download on the folkestone fringe website. the palette comprised a series of on-site recordings that captured the day-to-day sounds of the operation of the leas lift.
successful responses, submitted to the fringe, were then mixed and mastered for the leas lift sound 08 cd. if you are interested in

on saturday 23 august 08, visitors to the leas lift could hear the sound artists' audio work in the lift carriages, among the ambient sounds of the lift operating. on sunday 24 august 08, visitors to the lift could see live and improvised performances from angela valid and gordon kennedy, who performed there throughout the day.
