from sunday 31 august lulu allison will be creating a newspaper installation in the alleyway next to the waterstones bookshop, folkestone. it will be in response to the space. the architecture and the weather will to some extent dictate the terms of the installation.
the work will be constructed in layers or sheets or ribbons of cut newspaper, the text on the pages being reformed either deliberately or by chance into new stories.
the primary interest is in re-forming or manipulating a space, a temporary intervention that lasts as long as the paper holds against the weather or the pull of the passer-by. there is also an exploration of waste and value, yesterday’s stories become todays trash, in turn becoming paper walls that return to trash by a process of weather and wear. there is a balance to be achieved between the strength to last and the frailty to disperse. the process of dilapidation, whether over days or weeks is a part of the work. the frailty of the paper mirrors the frailty of interest in stories of news. things don’t last but they may change and endure in other forms. they are easily and often discarded.
