Plants play guitars! - Ruth Canning
Plants play guitars is a unique sound experience with living plants strumming guitars.
Date: Friday 01 - Sunday 10 August
Opening Times: Open Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 12:00 - 18:00
Location: Gallery 66, 66 The Old High Street, CT20 1RN
This sound installation features one-of-a-kind plant hybrids. Specially created digital and mechanical interfaces enable the plants’ natural rhythms to be rendered mechanically and to ‘play’ musical instruments.
The artist likens this to a tuning-in to the flow of the universe, via plants - its never-ending process and rhythms. Like switching on a radio, it is always broadcasting - we just need to tune in. The audience is invited to sit and stay as long as they wish. There is no beginning, middle or end.
Ruth Canning is a multi-media artist based in Folkestone. She studied at Central Saint Martin’s in London, graduating with an MA in Fine Art. Her practice ranges across installation, sound, photography and printing. Site and context are key to her work.
Ruth's current focus is sound and particularly on developing sound pieces using electrical signals from plants. Recent projects include The Plant Symphony played in her local plant store and composed with data taken from several plants on display. For the festival, Ruth invites the audience to tune in to the universe via plants.
