Both Robyn Neild and Jackie Brown’s work begins by walking. Neild walks along coastal paths or through transitional, overlooked spaces near her studio. Brown is currently focused on the heavily managed field adjacent to her studio, cut and shaped by the growing of crops. With deep and slow observation, both artists gather their material led by intuition and a sense of quiet ritual. These walks inform the emotional landscape of each of their works, with selected botanicals becoming both material and metaphor.
Neild’s sculptures are cast into enduring materials, interrogating the desire to protect the self, even at the cost of freedom. Thorned sanctuaries become both intimate retreats and cautionary enclosures, meditating on the tension between belonging and autonomy. Brown’s works use the materials of the land, gathered, cut and stitched together to honour the toil and labour of the fields and the hands that have fashioned the earth. Intensely fragile and constantly changing these works tell the stories held within the soil.
